Interview with Stefan Irmisch, CEO of Viessmann
Stefan Irmisch is the CEO of Viessmann, one of the leading international manufacturers of heating, industrial and refrigeration systems. He insists in the fact that the heat pump industry is already playing an important role in decarbonizing Europe.
What is your vision for decarbonising heating and cooling in Europe by 2050?
Heat-pumps have replaced most if not all heating systems based on fossil fuels. The heat sources are either natural heat, residual heat or is provided by cooling demands. All the electricity needed for running the heat-pumps comes from renewable sources, resulting in an overall CO2 neutral.
What is your contribution to this vision as stakeholder in your professional environment, but also as individual?
Providing the technical means to realize it, by developing products and solutions. Creating awareness for the possible use of heat-pumps in heating and cooling but also in industrial applications.
Who do you think is the strongest ally in making your vision of a decarbonised Europe a reality?
Policy makers, by creating the conditions to make heat pumps an attractive alternative to fossil fuels. But also associations, to spread the knowledge about this technology and its potential uses. And finally companies, to develop and offer attractive solutions to overcome prejudice and implementation hurdles.
